What to expect in Adalar

Adalar is the island district in the Sea of Marmara. Of its nine islands, Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada and Kınalıada are the four that most visitors know, each with a ferry pier, a small market and streets of wooden summer houses. Private cars are not allowed. The horse-drawn phaetons that once carried visitors were withdrawn in 2020, and battery-powered minibuses and municipal service vehicles now run on the main roads alongside bicycles and pedestrians.

Most people come on a day trip or stay in a summer house or small hotel on Büyükada. The streets around each pier are fairly level and lined with cafés, but the islands rise steeply behind the shore: Büyükada's roads climb towards Yücetepe and the Aya Yorgi monastery, and Heybeliada's lanes slope up to the hilltop school buildings. Paving is often old stone or patched asphalt.

With a wheelchair, a good island day usually means choosing one manageable route from the pier rather than trying to see a whole island in an afternoon.

Getting around Adalar with a wheelchair

The islands are reached only by sea. Şehir Hatları public ferries sail from Kabataş on the European side and from Kadıköy and Bostancı on the Asian side, and private operators add extra sailings, with the fullest timetable in summer. Boarding is over a gangway from a fixed pier, so ask the crew for help in good time, particularly when the sea is choppy. On the islands, electric minibuses and municipal vehicles have taken over from the horse carriages; ask on arrival whether the vehicle on your route can take a folded chair.

Lifts, ramps and boarding help can change from day to day; check with the operator or venue before you rely on them.

Delivery to Adalar

Island delivery is never automatic. Our vehicle cannot drive onto the islands, so every Adalar request is checked individually before you book. The team tells you whether delivery to your island address is possible for your dates or whether a handover at a mainland hotel or home you choose makes more sense before you cross. Any additional fee for the island handover is quoted once the plan is agreed, and collection at the end follows the same arrangement.

Questions about renting in Adalar

Can I take a rental wheelchair on the ferry to Büyükada?

Passengers travel to the islands with wheelchairs, but boarding is over a gangway whose angle depends on the pier and the sea. Arrive early, tell the crew you need help and sit on the main deck. A folding manual chair is the easiest option; a powered chair or scooter is heavy to lift over a gap, so talk the crossing through with us before you choose one.

How do I get around Büyükada without cars or horse carriages?

Since the phaetons were withdrawn, battery-powered minibuses and municipal vehicles run on Büyükada's main roads, and many visitors simply stay on the flatter streets near the pier. With a wheelchair, the seafront and the lanes behind the pier square are the realistic core of a visit. The climb to Aya Yorgi on Yücetepe is long and steep, so treat it as a separate decision.

Can you deliver to a summer house on Heybeliada or Burgazada?

Possibly, but only after individual confirmation. Send the island, the full address, your arrival and departure dates, and whether the house sits up a slope from the pier. The team then confirms whether island delivery is possible or suggests a mainland handover, and quotes any additional fee for that plan. Please do not book until this has been agreed.

How is delivery to the Princes' Islands priced?

Island addresses are priced individually once the team has confirmed that the handover is possible for your dates. Any additional fee for the island arrangement is quoted together with the standard delivery and collection charge and the rental rate. Nothing is booked until you have agreed the plan and the total.
