What to expect in Beyoğlu
Beyoğlu is the district on the northern side of the Golden Horn that has long been Istanbul's centre for nightlife, galleries, theatres and cafés. It runs from the Galata Bridge and the Karaköy waterfront up through Galata and Şişhane to İstiklal Avenue and Taksim, and includes Cihangir, Çukurcuma, Tophane, Kasımpaşa and the Golden Horn shore at Hasköy.
Many visitors stay here, in boutique hotels around Galata, apartments in Cihangir or larger hotels near Taksim. Karaköy's waterfront has been redeveloped around Galataport and the new Istanbul Modern building, and the Galata Tower stands on the hill above.
Beyoğlu is also one of the hardest areas of the city for a wheelchair. The slope from Karaköy up to Galata and İstiklal is steep, with stepped lanes, cobbles and narrow pavements, and Cihangir's streets drop sharply towards the Bosphorus. The level stretches are İstiklal itself and the Karaköy to Tophane waterfront; link them by funicular, metro or taxi rather than on foot.

Getting around Beyoğlu with a wheelchair
Beyoğlu has two historic funiculars that save the climbs: Tünel, between Karaköy and the lower end of İstiklal, and the F1, between Kabataş and Taksim. The T1 tram runs along the waterfront through Karaköy, Tophane and Fındıklı to Kabataş, and Karaköy and Kabataş both have ferry piers. The M2 metro stops at Şişhane and Taksim and crosses the Golden Horn to the old city on the Haliç bridge. Ask about lift access at funicular and metro stations before relying on them.

Can I reach Galata Tower in a wheelchair?
The tower sits at the top of steep, cobbled lanes, and the approach from Karaköy is one of the toughest in the city. Coming downhill from Tünel and Şişhane is gentler but still uneven underfoot. A taxi drop-off as close to the tower square as traffic allows is usually the most realistic approach. Check directly with the tower about access inside before you go.
Is a Cihangir apartment a good choice with a wheelchair?
Cihangir is charming but steep, with stairs connecting some streets and many older buildings without lifts. If you book an apartment there, ask the host about steps at the entrance, lift size and the gradient to the nearest point a taxi can stop. For someone who depends on a wheelchair full-time, a hotel near İstiklal or on the Karaköy waterfront is often easier.
