Eyüpsultan, usually just called Eyüp, sits at the head of the Golden Horn outside the old city walls. Its historic heart is the Eyüp Sultan Mosque and its courtyard, one of the most important religious sites in Istanbul, surrounded by tombs, cemeteries and a busy market. Above it rises the hill with the Pierre Loti café and viewpoint.
The district is much larger than this core. It stretches north through Alibeyköy and Rami to newer suburbs at Göktürk and Kemerburgaz and on into the Belgrade Forest. At Silahtarağa, on the Golden Horn, a former power station has become the santralistanbul campus with its Museum of Energy.
Around the mosque the streets are fairly level but crowded, especially on Fridays and religious holidays. The cemetery paths up to Pierre Loti are steep and partly stepped, so most wheelchair users take the cable car instead; check whether its cabins and stations suit your chair before relying on it.

Getting around Eyüpsultan (Eyüp) with a wheelchair
The T5 tram follows the Golden Horn shore from Eminönü through Fener and Balat to Eyüpsultan and Alibeyköy, and Golden Horn ferries call at Eyüp pier. The cable car links the waterfront with Pierre Loti hill. Further out, the M7 serves Alibeyköy, the M11 airport line stops at Kemerburgaz and Göktürk, and the T4 tram passes through Rami. Distances between these areas are large, so check which line actually serves your accommodation.
Lifts, ramps and boarding help can change from day to day; check with the operator or venue before you rely on them.

Can I visit Eyüp Sultan Mosque in a wheelchair?
The square and outer courtyard are reached from fairly level streets, though crowds can be dense on Fridays, during Ramadan and on religious holidays. Access to the interior and the tomb depends on thresholds and steps that are best checked on the day with the mosque attendants. Visiting at a quieter weekday time makes moving around much easier.
Is the cable car to Pierre Loti wheelchair friendly?
Many visitors with limited mobility use it to avoid the steep, stepped cemetery path, but suitability depends on your chair's size and the boarding arrangement at each station. Ask staff before buying a ticket, and consider a narrower folding chair for the day. At the top, check the route from the station to the viewpoint before setting off.
