What to expect in Kadıköy
Kadıköy is the Asian side's liveliest centre and the place to see everyday Istanbul: a ferry port, a crowded food market, bookshops, cafés and a long seafront. Most short-stay guests base themselves around the market streets near the pier, in Moda's quieter residential lanes, or in hotels and flats close to Bağdat Avenue.
Terrain changes a lot within a few hundred metres. The market quarter rises gently from the pier, with stretches of cobbles and narrow pavements crowded with stalls and café tables. The Moda seafront and the coastal park running on towards Fenerbahçe and Caddebostan are level and open. Bağdat Avenue, the long shopping street parallel to the coast, is flat, with broad pavements along much of its length.
In the evenings and at weekends the market streets get very crowded, which matters more than the gradient when you are pushing a chair.

Getting around Kadıköy with a wheelchair
Kadıköy pier has frequent ferries to Eminönü, Karaköy and Beşiktaş, and the M4 metro starts here and runs east to Sabiha Gökçen Airport. Marmaray stations at Ayrılık Çeşmesi (the M4 interchange), Söğütlüçeşme, Feneryolu, Göztepe, Erenköy, Suadiye and Bostancı follow the railway just inland of Bağdat Avenue, and the Metrobüs terminates at Söğütlüçeşme. Bostancı pier serves the Princes' Islands. The heritage tram loop to Moda is charming, but its old cars are boarded by climbing steps.
