Sancaktepe is a young district, created in 2008 from parts of Ümraniye, Kartal and Pendik, and it is overwhelmingly residential. Samandıra, Sarıgazi and Yenidoğan are its main quarters, with newer housing estates spreading east towards the forested hills.

Getting around Sancaktepe with a wheelchair
The M5 metro has been extended from Çekmeköy into Sancaktepe, with stations around Sarıgazi and Samandıra, giving a direct ride to Ümraniye, Altunizade and Üsküdar. Buses remain important for the outer estates. By car, the TEM motorway and the Northern Marmara Motorway are close by, and Sabiha Gökçen Airport is a short drive to the south-east, outside rush hour at least.
