Şile is Istanbul's Black Sea district, a holiday coast of sandy beaches, cliffs and forest a long drive north-east of the city centre. In summer the town and the river village of Ağva fill with weekend visitors and holiday-home owners; outside the season both are quiet.
The town sits on a headland with a 19th-century lighthouse, and the ruins of a small castle stand on an islet just offshore. Its streets slope down steeply towards the harbour and the beaches. Ağva, further east along the coast, lies where the Göksu and Yeşilçay streams meet the sea, with riverside guesthouses and restaurants on flatter ground.

Getting around Şile with a wheelchair
There is no rail link to Şile. Public buses run out from Üsküdar along the Şile road, passing through forest near Ömerli, and the journey is long. The coast roads between Şile town and Ağva are narrow and winding in places, with little pavement outside the villages, so most visitors rely on a car or taxi. On summer weekends traffic on the Şile road can be heavy in both directions, especially on Friday and Sunday evenings.
Lifts, ramps and boarding help can change from day to day; check with the operator or venue before you rely on them.
