Tuzla is the easternmost coastal district on Istanbul's Asian side, bordering Kocaeli province. It is best known for its shipyards and industrial zones, but the old centre around the fishing harbour, with its seafood restaurants and marina, is a pleasant, low-key place to eat by the sea.
Many visitors come for a specific reason: an event at the Istanbul Park racing circuit, study at a university campus such as Sabancı University in Orhanlı, or a stay near Sabiha Gökçen, which lies just across the district boundary. Residential quarters such as Aydınlı, İçmeler and Aydıntepe spread inland from the coast and along the railway.
The harbour front is level and good for a short outing, while streets further inland climb towards the motorway and the industrial estates.

Getting around Tuzla with a wheelchair
Marmaray runs along the coast through Tuzla, with stations including Aydıntepe, İçmeler and Tuzla, continuing east to Gebze, and it gives a direct ride under the Bosphorus to the historic peninsula. There is no metro inside Tuzla; the nearest M4 station is at Sabiha Gökçen Airport to the north. For Istanbul Park, Sabancı University or Orhanlı, a car or taxi is the practical choice, as public transport there is limited.
