What to expect in Beyazıt
Beyazıt is the hilltop quarter at the centre of the Historic Peninsula, built around Beyazıt Square, the monumental gate of Istanbul University and the early sixteenth-century Beyazıt Mosque. Right beside it is the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with the old book market, Sahaflar Çarşısı, tucked between the bazaar and the mosque.
Visitors come here to shop, to see the Süleymaniye Mosque on the neighbouring ridge, and to walk down through the market streets of Mahmutpaşa to Eminönü. Hotels are scattered around Beyazıt, Çemberlitaş and Vezneciler, all with easy tram access to Sultanahmet.
Beyazıt Square itself is a large, open space, but its surroundings are not easy. Inside the Grand Bazaar the lanes are crowded and the floor changes level in places, the streets running down to Eminönü are steep and congested, and the approach to the Süleymaniye involves slopes and uneven paving.

Getting around Beyazıt with a wheelchair
The T1 tram's Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı stop sits on Ordu Caddesi beside the square, one stop from Çemberlitaş and two from Sultanahmet. The M2 metro's Vezneciler station is a short distance away, with trains crossing the Golden Horn to Şişhane and Taksim. Taxis can reach the square and the main roads, but not the bazaar lanes. Entering the Grand Bazaar from a gate near the tram stop avoids the steep approaches from the Eminönü side.
Lifts, ramps and boarding help can change from day to day; check with the operator or venue before you rely on them.
Delivery to Beyazıt
Beyazıt is part of Fatih, so our standard delivery and collection service covers it. Give the exact hotel entrance and a reception contact, because many hotels here are on lanes between the bazaar and Ordu Caddesi with limited vehicle access. Our Aksaray store is two tram stops away, so collecting in person is also an option if you book an appointment.

Can I visit the Grand Bazaar in a wheelchair?
Many wheelchair users do, but go prepared. The main lanes are reasonably wide, yet crowds are dense around midday and on Saturdays, some floors are uneven, and certain gates have steps or slopes. Go early on a weekday, enter from a gate near Beyazıt or Çemberlitaş, and bring a companion to help through the busiest stretches.
How hard is it to reach the Süleymaniye Mosque from Beyazıt?
The mosque stands on the neighbouring ridge, a short distance behind the university, but the route involves slopes, narrow pavements and some uneven paving. A taxi to the mosque's own street is usually easier than pushing from the square. Inside the complex the courtyards are spacious; ask the attendants about the most convenient entrance.
