What to expect in Sultanahmet

Sultanahmet is the monumental heart of the Historic Peninsula, where most first-time visitors to Istanbul spend their days. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern all lie within a few minutes of each other, grouped around the Hippodrome and the gardens between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.

Many visitors stay here, in small hotels and guesthouses in Cankurtaran and around Akbıyık Street running down towards the Sea of Marmara, or in larger hotels near the Hippodrome and the tram line. Gülhane Park and the Istanbul Archaeology Museums lie just below Topkapı.

Sultanahmet is beautiful but demanding for a wheelchair. Many lanes are cobbled, pavements are narrow and kerbs high, and the area slopes noticeably down from the Hippodrome towards the sea. The open squares are more manageable, but entrances to historic buildings vary widely, so confirm access arrangements with each monument before you visit.

Getting around Sultanahmet with a wheelchair

The T1 tram has stops at Sultanahmet, Gülhane and Çemberlitaş, running north-east to Sirkeci, Eminönü and Kabataş and west to Beyazıt and Aksaray. Sirkeci, with its Marmaray station, is downhill from Gülhane. There is no metro station in Sultanahmet itself. Taxis can reach many hotels, but some lanes are narrow or restricted, so ask your hotel where cars can stop. Tram stops here are often crowded with tour groups.

Lifts, ramps and boarding help can change from day to day; check with the operator or venue before you rely on them.

Delivery to Sultanahmet

Our standard delivery and collection service covers Sultanahmet, and our Aksaray store is only a few tram stops away. Send your hotel name and reception contact, and we will arrange the handover around your arrival. Because many hotels sit on narrow, cobbled lanes, the driver may need to stop at the nearest accessible point; reception staff usually know where vehicles can wait.

Questions about renting in Sultanahmet

Is a rental wheelchair practical on Sultanahmet's cobbles?

It is workable with the right chair and some help. Cobbles shake a standard chair and make pushing tiring, so a chair with larger rear wheels and a companion to push make a real difference. Favour the generally smoother open spaces, such as the Hippodrome and the main squares, and use the tram between Gülhane and Çemberlitaş rather than pushing up the slopes.

Which Sultanahmet sights should I check before visiting?

Arrangements differ at each site and change with restoration work and visitor rules. Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are working mosques that close to visitors at prayer times; Topkapı Palace has large courtyards with uneven surfaces; the Basilica Cistern is underground. Contact each venue, or check its official website, about step-free entrances and assistance shortly before your visit.

Can the wheelchair be ready when I check in to my Sultanahmet hotel?

Yes. Sultanahmet is covered by our standard delivery service, so we can aim to hand the equipment to reception before or at your check-in. Let us know your arrival time and the name the booking is under, and confirm with the hotel that it is happy to keep the equipment safe if you arrive after the handover.

What does delivery to Sultanahmet cost?

Sultanahmet is inside our standard delivery zone, which covers Fatih, Beyoğlu, Sultanahmet, Taksim, Bakırköy and Zeytinburnu. Hotel or home delivery and collection here are charged at the standard delivery and pickup rate, with no additional location fee. The full total, rental plus delivery, is confirmed before you book.
