What to expect in Taksim
Taksim is the square and surrounding hotel district at the top of Beyoğlu, the busiest meeting point in modern Istanbul. The square is framed by the Republic Monument, the rebuilt Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM), Taksim Mosque and the entrance to Gezi Park, with İstiklal Avenue heading south-west towards Tünel. Large international hotels line the roads towards Harbiye and Gümüşsuyu, and the Talimhane grid behind the square is packed with mid-range hotels.
For a wheelchair user, Taksim is one of the easier bases in the city. The square itself is a large paved open space, İstiklal Avenue is pedestrianised and follows a fairly level ridge for most of its length, and the M2 metro and the F1 funicular both start here. Cafés, pharmacies and shops are close at hand.
The difficulties begin off the main axes. Streets drop steeply from İstiklal towards Cihangir, Tophane and Tarlabaşı, and the Talimhane grid has narrow pavements and frequent kerbs. İstiklal is also extremely crowded in the evenings and at weekends.

Getting around Taksim with a wheelchair
The M2 metro's Taksim station lies beneath the square, with trains north to Şişli and Levent and south to Şişhane and across the Golden Horn to the old city. The F1 funicular runs from Taksim down to Kabataş, connecting with the T1 tram and the Bosphorus ferries. The red nostalgic tram runs along İstiklal to Tünel, where the historic Tünel funicular descends to Karaköy. Ask about lifts at each station before you rely on them.

Can I get the wheelchair delivered to my Taksim hotel on arrival day?
Yes, arrival-day delivery to a Taksim hotel can be arranged. Send your hotel name, arrival date and approximate check-in time, and we will agree a handover at reception. If you are landing late or very early, check with the hotel that it is happy to hold the equipment until you arrive. Booking ahead gives the best chance of your preferred time.
Is İstiklal Avenue manageable in a wheelchair?
Mostly, yes. It is pedestrianised and broadly level from Taksim to Galatasaray, with a gentle downhill gradient as it approaches Tünel. The stone paving, the nostalgic tram rails, crowds and the odd uneven slab need care. Mornings are much quieter than evenings. Avoid turning into side streets towards Cihangir or Tarlabaşı without knowing how steep they are.
How do I get from Taksim to Sultanahmet with a wheelchair?
The most direct public-transport route is the F1 funicular down to Kabataş, then the T1 tram across the Galata Bridge to the Sultanahmet stop, with no further changes. It depends on lifts and on how crowded the tram is. If the chair is heavy or you are travelling at peak times, a taxi to your Sultanahmet destination is usually simpler.
